The brewery also had a soda bottling plant next to the brewery. During prohibition the brewery was 'locked' but a tunnel ran between the two thus allowing the process to continue unbeknown to the local authorities. It was only after a box car full of 'soda' derailed in Syracuse that the operation was discovered and shut down.
The owner escaped prosecution, so the rumor goes, using the argument that the law states whoever controls the property is responsible for what happens on it and the Sheriff was in control as it was his padlock on the brewery doors.
