The Ice Storm of 1998
The Ice Storm of 1998
In January of 1998 one of the worst natural disasters to hit Jefferson County struck - The Ice Storm of 1998. Around thirty-six hours of freezing rain left power out in the county and roads impassable, and many people were without power for weeks. Power and utility crews, fire departments, emergency workers, the American Red Cross, the National Guard, and others from all over the United States and Canada came to Jefferson County to help. The ice storm also affected states as far away as Maine.
