Large city near Jefferson County, about 60 miles south of Watertown. County seat of Onondaga County. West of Syracuse is the Empire Expo Center which hosts the annual Great New York State Fair, and there area number of convention centers, malls, and Syracuse University, a major research university, and a number of smaller colleges and professional schools. Syracuse was named after the original Syracuse which was a city on the east coast of Sicily, Italy. Interestingly, it shares some similarities including a formerly important salt industry and a neighboring town of Salina. Syracuse's airport is the largest in the region.
