Swarthout Site

An early 15th century St. Lawrence Iroquoian village, rediscovered during sand-mining operations in the Town of Clayton. Mining was halted when human remains were found. To protect the site, the State of New York purchased it. The human remains were reburied and the mined area was stabilized in 2002.
