Sackets Harbor[edit | edit source]

Sackets Harbor lies in the Town of Hounsfield in Jefferson County. Settlement began in 1801 and the village was incorporated in 1814.


The first steamboat on the Great Lakes was built at Sackets Harbor between 1816 and 1817 and named the Ontario. The Ontario was 110 feet long and 24 feet wide with an average speed of about five miles an hour driven by twenty-three horsepower engines. Her maiden voyage and regular route was was from Ogdensburg to Lewiston.
