Felts Mills

Felts Mills[edit | edit source]

Felts Mills is a hamlet located in the Town of Rutland in Jefferson County. Settlements in Felts Mills began in 1800.

The village was originally called "Mid Road" because of its location midway between Watertown and Carthage.

The village came into being because of it's waterpower potential, being near some good falls and rapids. A grist mill and dam were built there when the village came into being, and then in 1821 or thereabouts a better dam and stone mill were built, in 1824 John Felt built a series of sawmills and the village was named after this. 1889 saw the building of the large Taggart Paper Mill across from Felts Mills on the island. Photos can be found here.]

The singer/song writer Ron Wasserman supposedly lived in Felts Mills at one time.
